Hand built in Malvern in the UK, the new Morgan Supersport 400 looks a million dollars but is not a limited run restomod with a seven-figure price tag. It is the most powerful and possibly the best model that the company has made since 1909. It might also be a beacon for the whole performance car industry because the Supersport blends restomod with mainstream in a very inspiring way.
In this episode of The Driver’s Seat on Hagerty, Henry Catchpole takes a look behind the scenes at the Morgan factory on Pickersleigh Road to see how the company is embracing technology to preserve its past. We see the latest, exclusive Midsummer Coupe, watch metal being worked, wood being fashioned and find a very early, three-wheeled Morgan from the company’s long history.
Henry Catchpole also takes the stunning new Supersport 400 out to some beautiful roads in Wales to put it through its paces. With over 400hp from its 3-litre, turbocharged, straight-six engine and a kerb weight of just 2579lb (1170kg) it certainly has very modern performance. In fact it has the same power to weight ratio as a 992.2 Porsche GT3 and a Corvette E-Ray. It will hit 62mph in just 3.6 seconds and go on to 180mph, but is also remarkably refined. The Supersport starts at £109,000 and the top of the range 400 costs from £139,000.
Back at the factory, we talk to Morgan’s Chief Design Officer, Jonathan Wells, about the general philosophy of Morgan today and how it will approach the future. And talking of the future, did you know that there was nearly a Morgan EV a few years ago? And are you aware of the link between Morgan and Rimac? It’s all in the film.
