Porsche continues to raid its archives for inspiration with the second model in its Heritage Design collectors’ editions. And frankly its latest effort ticks all the boxes: wide body, double-bubble roof, ducktail spoiler, mighty 543bhp motor, rear-wheel drive, and a manual gearbox.

The new 911 Sport Classic is based on the Turbo S, utilising its extra width, while slightly reducing its overall output so that the rear tyres don’t get vaporised and the seven-speed manual transmission can cope. Ceramic composite brakes, rear axle steering, dynamic chassis control, active suspension and the Sport Chrono Pack are all installed.

Carbon fibre is used extensively to save weight and sculpt the car’s throwback bodywork. The bonnet, roof, and rear spoiler are all made of the stuff and echo shapes first seen on the Carrera 2.7 RS. The centre-lock alloy wheels are modelled on the famous fat-spoke Fuchs design, although at 20 and 21-inches in diameter they’re huge compared to the ones that inspired them. Still, the 911’s bigger these days, too.

Inside there’s a mix of semi-aniline leather in black and cognac, with Pepita cloth seat inserts and dark Paldao wood trim. A numbered plaque on the dashboard will mark each car in the 1250-unit run.

Buyers will also be encouraged to stump up for a matching Porsche Chronograph watch. Prices for the car and timepiece will be announced in time for the 2023 model year, although both are probably already sold out.

Retro doesn’t always work, and it can feel a little cheap plundering the back-catalogue for inspiration rather than looking to the future. But when you throw back to a car as stunning as the Carrera RS, it’s hard to go wrong. Despite the significant increase in size over the years this 911 SC looks pretty perfect to us.
