The motoring season in the UK is rather compressed compared to that of say Italy or Arizona, so consequently, we tend to squeeze the maximum amount of driving into the months of June, July, August and September. Frighteningly, June, July and August are already behind us. No matter, some of our favourite events come late in the season. Here’s a quick rundown on what’s coming up:
The saying goes, If you can’t find it at Beaulieu, it doesn’t exist. We’ll put that to the test starting on 6-8 September, when Hagerty attends the venerable autojumble. More than 2,000 vendors are expected plus an auto mart that includes 200-plus cars for sale. In addition, Hagerty valuation experts Dave Kinney and Rob Sass will participate in a panel discussion on Friday at Beaulieu’s onsite theatre; the topic will be values in changing marketplace. And the Bonhams sale at The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu on 7 September promises to be a memorable one, with some very lovely pre-war British cars like a 1937 Alvis 4.3-litre Drophead Coupe and a 1939 Lagonda LG3 Drophead Coupe among the consignments.
Perhaps Britain’s best loved event, the Goodwood Revival is back the following weekend (13-15 September) in all of its vintage race car, aircraft and period clothing glory. What enthusiast wouldn’t be pushed into terminal sensory overload by sounds that run the gamut from Coventry Climax to Rolls-Royce Merlin? Legends like Sir Stirling Moss, John Surtees, Derek Bell and Richard Attwood are expected this year. The event is already sold out for Saturday and Sunday with a limited number of Friday tickets available as of this writing.
In just five short years, the revival of the Kop Hill Climb has made it onto the short list of must-attend events in the UK. Bikes and cars will assault the hill on 21-22 September with a further 200 on display in the paddock. The 1939-47 World Land Speed Record-holder 24-litre Napier-Railton will be a sight to behold and hear. Ear plugs are optional although highly recommended. Admission is a very friendly £10.
