A Ford Sierra RS Cosworth previously owned by touring car ace Steve Soper is for sale in Scotland. The Car Cave Scotland understands the Moonstone Blue beauty spent two years in Germany before being registered in the UK in 1988.

At the time, Soper was a driver for Eggenberger Motorsport, racing in XR4Ti, RS Cosworth and RS500 versions of the Ford Sierra. He finished second in the 1988 European Touring Car Championship (ETCC), before switching to the German Touring Car Championship and, in the 1990s, an association with BMW. Soper also finished second in the 1993 British Touring Car Championship.

The Sierra RS Cosworth was unveiled at the 1985 Geneva Motor Show, before going on sale in July 1986. It was, at the time, Ford’s fastest production road car, with a top speed of 150mph and a 0-60mph time of just 6.5 seconds. Perhaps most impressive of all was the price: £15,950, which was attention grabbing for the day.

Our Jesse Crosse, who successfully tracked down the Cossie he ran for a year, was on the car’s launch in Spain. He said: “The body kit pulled no punches, with wide arches curiously dwarfing the 15-inch alloy wheels because in fact, they were designed to cover much wider and larger diameter racing rims. The huge spoiler produces 20kg of downforce at 70mph to counteract the substantial lift the body shape produced at top speed, a top speed the base Sierra had never been intended to achieve or been tested at.”

If you fancy a similar car, this is your opportunity to buy one, originally registered as ‘C219 XLK’. The Car Cave Scotland says the Sierra was restored in 2015 and has since covered around 2000 miles. It was last sent for an MOT in July 2018 when it passed with no advisories. The vendor will “happily put a year’s MOT on it for the new owner”.

From The Car Cave Scotland: “This is a tidy old car with interesting history. Given that these cars seem to be constantly increasing in value this is a good investment. A superb low mileage one sold at Silverstone Auctions for £130k. You can always improve on the condition of a car, but you can’t rewrite the history.”

That’s a reference to ‘D50 UCU’, a 1986 Sierra RS Cosworth which sold for £132,750 at the NEC Classic Motor Show Sale 2022. The ex-Steve Soper Sierra is priced at a more reasonable £52,995, albeit with ten times the mileage of the Silverstone Auctions car.
