History of the 1998 - 2005 Mazda MX-5 NB

Mazda MX5 NB (Roadster), 1998-2005

The Mazda MX5 NB was in production from 1998 to 2005. Styled in house, it is a front-engine, rear wheel drive sports car seating two adults.

The Mazda MX5 NB was the second iteration of Mazda's popular small roadster. It incorporated styling cues from the RX7 alongside fixed headlamps, and a similar mechanical package to the original NA model. 1.6 and 1.8 litre versions were available, with 108bhp and 140bhp respectively. Slightly wider and more aerodynamic, it offers better value than the NA today without compromising the driving package. As with the NA, there are several limited editions based upon the NB MX5 including the 10th Anniversary - painted Innocent Blue, it was the first six speed model and came with Bilstein shocks, a limited slip diff, and polished alloy wheels. Each car was numbered, 3500 were built and just 600 came to the UK.

A minor facelift for 2001 brought slightly sharper styling, standard foglamps and clear indicator lenses among other detail differences. Both engines were uprated - the 1.6 now developed 125bhp, and the 1.8 was upped slightly to 145bhp. A concept Mazda MX5 NB coupe was put into production, but never came to Europe. Production would cease in 2005, when Mazda launched the all new, bigger and more powerful NC model.

With scores of rivals to choose from in period and today, the MX5 enjoys its position at the top of the pile through ability rather than through necessity. Buyers in the UK could have chosen the mid engined MGF and subsequent TF models, or a BMW Z3 1.8 or Mercedes-Benz SLK200, if they wanted a suitable alternative. Those in need of more space could consider the excellent Peugeot 306 cabriolet, while those looking for a classic sports car with a thriving ownership community might even contemplate the MGB as an alternative. Finally, the MX5 NA and MX5 NC models are excellent - if more expensive - options if an NB isn't the car for you.
