1977 Porsche 911

The Porsche 911 SC (Super Carrera) is a performance car manufactured between 1978 and 1983. It was available as a coupe, a Targa, or (in 1983 only) a convertible Cabriolet, and a total of 61,495 were built. Styled on the 1976-77 limited-production Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0, the 911 SC has a rear- engine, rear wheel drive 2+2 layout and was aimed at the sports car market.

Often considered to be an ideal entry-level aircooled Porsche 911, the SC combines classic looks with a strong 3.0 litre engine and galvanised G-series steel bodies that offer some protection against rust. Ergonomics were also improved over earlier cars with automatic heating controls, power windows, a better centre console and headlight cleaners.

The 3.0 litre aircooled engine produced 188 bhp which increased to 204 bhp in 1981, when the compression ratio was bumped from 8.6:1 to 9.9:1. The engine and gearbox were both aluminium, and the earlier problem of head bolts pulling out (due to differing expansion rates with magnesium) was resolved. From 1980, the Turbo’s radiator-style oil cooler was used on all 911s. Rear wheel arches were widened for seven-inch wheels in 1978, and 16-inch wheels made optional in 1980.

If considering buying a Porsche 911SC, it is advisable to find one with good maintenance records. Recommended improvements include fitment of the improved Carrera chain tensioner and a modified blow-off valve, and if these have been done it shows care has been taken in the car. “Boy racer” modifications depress values and are best corrected. These include lowering kits, whale-tale spoilers, flared arches, short shift gearbox and aftermarket slant nose (Flachbau). Although galvanised, rust can still be a problem. Check the sills, kidney bowls, screen surrounds and around the battery tray in particular. Watch out for ringers, clocking, poorly-repaired accident damage and track use without corresponding service records. A professional inspection is always advised.

Today, (typical with most Porsche 911 values) the Porsche 911SC coupe is the most desirable of the body shapes, followed by the Targa, then the Cabriolet. The 911SC is light, full of torque and a delight to drive and is one of the unsung heroes of the Porsche 911 range.

Alternatives include the 911 930 (Turbo-charged), the later 911 Carrera 3.2, or the front- engine Porsche 928. Similar sports cars from other manufacturers include the Aston Martin DBS V8, the Jaguar XJS, the Ferrari 308 GTB and the Maserati Merak SS.
