History of the 1962 - 1968 Alfa Romeo Giulia TI
Alfa Romeo Giulia TI, 1962 to 1968
The Alfa Romeo Giulia TI was released in June 1962. It combined the best of the previous Giulietta - a development of the alloy twin-cam 'Nord' engine, unitary chassis and independent suspension - but wrapped it in an all-new design. The idea was to save on construction costs but creating a range of cars (saloon, coupe and convertible) that used the same mechanical underpinnings.
The Giulia TI (Tourismo Internazionale) is a four-door saloon, originally with six seats facilitated by a front bench and column shift until 1964, when a floor-mounted gearstick and standard front seats were fitted. Originally given Tipo 105.14, in 1964 this was changed to 105.08, with the 1600 (1570cc) 00514 motor fitted. Right-hand drive cars were given the designation 105.09.
A few Alfa Romeo Giulia TIs were adapted by Carrozzeria Colli to create an estate, a model that was popular with Italian state organisations.
Today, the Alfa Romeo Giulia TI has become a collectable classic. The wide availability of mechanical parts and simple upgrades make them attractive both as practical classics and as historic racers. Later cars with floor-mounted gearshift are better suited to this latter use, but earlier cars are rarer.
