Model History: MG J2 Midget

Introduced in 1932, the MG J2 Midget took the 847cc OHV engine from its successful predecessor the M-Type Midget and dropped it in to a new sporting body that drew inspiration from the famous racing C-Type 'Montlhéry' Midgets. Through twin SU carburettors, the engine created 36bhp at 5500rpm through a four-speed 'crash' gearbox, providing a top speed of 80mph and 0-60 in 15 seconds. Early cars were fitted with cycle-type wings, but from chassis J3438, the car gained 'swept wings'.

The MG J2 Midget was extremely popular and today the model remains (with the PA) one of the most numerous of the pre-war MGs. Many have trials history, and many have been adapted over the years: popular modifications are Ford engine swaps and, for those who could find them, pre-selec gearboxes such as graced the racing Midgets.
