History of the 1972 - 1976 DAF 66
Model History Daf 66
The DAF 66 was released by the Dutch manufacturer in 1972 as an evolution of the DAF 55. Although much of the redesign was cosmetic, the 1108cc inline four-cylinder OHV Renault engine was adapted to improve emissions and the suspension was radically overhauled.
The car was available in two-door saloon, estate and coupe form and in three trim levels: De Luxe, Super Luxe and the sporting Marathon. The DAF 66 featured the innovative belt-driven continuous automatic ‘Variomatic’ transmission and produced 53bhp in standard form and 60bhp for the Marathon specification models. Thanks to its gearbox, the car has become notable for being able to drive as fast in reverse as it does forwards.
In 1973, the Marathon engines were increased in size to 1289cc and the name changed to ‘1300 Marathon’. This model also gained foglights.
Today, Marathon models are more collectable than their De Luxe and Super Luxe brethren. All models remain affordable and very practical classics: the Variomatic system is very durable and handling surprisingly good. Bodywork issues can be the biggest challenge, as can finding interior trim.
