History of the 1967 - 1969 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33
Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale, 1967 - 1969
The Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale is a two-seat, front-engine, rear wheel drive sporting coupe made by Alfa Romeo between 1967 and 1969.
The 33 Stradale (Tipo 105.33) was the result of an exercise by Alfa Romeo to produce a road car based on the open-top 33 Sport racing car. Alfa specified that the car should have 95% of the performance of the racing car, and under testing it achieved a top speed of 260kph (161.5mph).
The Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale has a 1995cc V8 engine, with four overhead camshafts producing 230bhp at 8,800rpm. The chassis is based on the 33 Sport, elongated by 10cm, and clad with a Franco Scaglione- designed body that includes gullwing doors and exposed air intake trumpets under a rear glass deck. Just 18 examples were built, all painted Alfa Red.
Today the 33 Stradale is one of the most collectable and valuable models of Alfa Romeo. It is a stunningly beautiful car, and one that has generated many replicas. Period alternative GT cars include the Lamborghini Miura, the Ferrari 275 GTB and there are some similarities with the design of the McLaren M6GT.
